SCOUTING REPORT - WEEK 9

GAME #36 - NO. 10 STANFORD CARDINAL (18-11-1)

SCOUTING STANFORD: The 2008 Stanford Baseball team is looking to return to its familiar spot among the top teams in the Pac-10 Conference and also get back to NCAA postseason action after its string of 13 straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament came to an end during a difficult 2007 season that saw the Cardinal need a late season run just to finish 28-28 overall and 9-15 in the Pac-10. This year's club has plenty of reasons to be hopeful as the Cardinal will be an experienced group that returns many of the key components from last year's team. Stanford has a total of 29 players back in uniform from a year ago, including 13 of the 14 pitchers who saw action on the mound last season and seven position player starters. Leading the Cardinal at the plate, junior outfielder Sean Ratliff is batting .313 (36-115) with nine doubles, three triples, 11 homeruns, and 32 RBI. On the mound, sophomore right-hander Jeffery Inman is 5-0 with a 1.49 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 36.1 innings. Head Coach Mark Marquess is in his 30th season at the helm for the Cardinal and has a 1253-608-6 career record.

The losing streak includes five games and two and a half seasons (2006 through the two teams first meeting of 2008). USF took a 4-2 come from behind victory at Municipal Stadium on April 9, 2008.

DONS WIN STREAK ENDS: USF may have been swept by No. 9 Pepperdine last weekend, but that can't dampen spirits after the Dons completed a super hot streak in which they won 13 of 14 games, including seven and six game win streaks. At Benedetti Diamond this year, the Dons are batting .350 with 133 hits (36 doubles, five triples, and seven homeruns), and 85 RBI. Pitchers have a 3.00 ERA with 87 strikeouts and are holding opponents to a .202 batting average.

USF IN WEST COAST CONFERENCE STANDINGS: As a team, USF is second with a 4.50 ERA. Individually, nine Dons are among the top ten in 11 categories.
